Based on the Greg Laurie book, “Steve McQueen: Salvation of an American Icon,” the movie traces the life of Steve McQueen and his conversion to Christ. Although he was an icon of a past generation, McQueen’s story is relevant today – even for millennials. He was cool, he was unconventional, rich and famous – and he needed Jesus. At the end of his life he found true peace and ultimate meaning by surrendering his life to Jesus Christ. He was buried holding the bible Billy Graham had given him. His story is gripping, entertaining and transforming. The impact of the movie has been astounding, and it could make a difference in the lives of anyone who sees it. The perfect film to bring a searching or unsaved friend, neighbor or loved one – no matter what their age.
Made by the Erwin Brothers (Woodlawn, I Can Only Imagine, October Baby) and Ben Smallbone (Priceless), . At the end of the movie a salvation message is presented by Greg Laurie.
About The Film
Steve McQueen truly is an American Icon. One of America’s most endearing and intriguing movie stars, he “is still the King of Cool” according to Esquire Magazine—50 years after the zenith of his career! The coolest thing about him, however, is barely known, despite countless biographies and articles.
Steve McQueen was a believer in Jesus Christ.
On the surface McQueen had everything he could want—fame, cars, homes, more money than he could spend in a lifetime. An avid fan of the actor (and owner of a replica of McQueen’s car in the classic film Bullitt), Pastor Greg Laurie hits the road in his mint Mustang, traveling the country in search of the true, untold story of McQueen’s redemption-filled final chapters.
Narrated by Gary Sinise, interviews include:
- Barbara Minty McQueen, his widow
- Academy Award®-winning director Mel Gibson
- Renown stuntman Stan Barrett
- Celebrated McQueen biographer Marshall Terrill
- Actors Barbara Leigh and Mel Novak

“The generation that remembers McQueen will enjoy the documentary and its intriguing stories of his life—how he missed the big bucks from The Blob, how he came to possess Billy Graham’s Bible, and more. Later generations will be gripped by how McQueen’s life exemplifies a timeless truth: Wealth and fame crumble when compared to life in Christ.”
Randall Murphree, AFA Journal
“STEVE MCQUEEN: AMERICAN ICON is Ecclesiastes on the big screen with the storyline of a man who obtains fame and fortune and then reaches the end of his life only to proclaim, ‘All is vanity.’ McQueen’s discovery is one that all of us need to hear.”

“… There’s an understated modesty to this documentary that I find winning.”
